Chilaiditi’s s ign is an incidental radiological finding. Chilaiditi’s syndrome may have abdominal pain, vomiting, anorexia, constipation, flatulence, air swallowing and dyspnea . 2 The prevalence of Chilaiditi’s sign is 0.025% to 0.28%3 and more in elderly men.4 Chilaiditi’s sign is an acquired condition rather than a congenital. The causes include hepatic factors: ptosis of the liver, small liver, relaxation of the suspensory ligament and fixation of the liver due to adhesions; intestinal: absence of normal suspensory ligament of transverse colon, abnormality or absence of the falciform ligament, redundant colon, congenital malrotation or malposition of the colon, and diaphragmatic : paralysis or eventration.4,5

Chilaiditi's sign secondary to Richter's hernia or Chilaiditi's syndrome?

Chilaiditi's sign and syndrome seem similar but are actually different entities, difficult to distinguish from each other. A 60-year-old female presented with a clinical scenario of intestinal obstruction, which was thought to be Chilaiditi's syndrome because of the unusual impression of gas under the diaphragm, but was confirmed as Chilaiditi's sign after laparotomy. The interposition of dilat...

Pneumoperitoneum or Chilaiditi's sign.

Chilaiditi's sign describes the incidental radiographic finding of the bowel positioned between the right diaphragm and the liver. This is often misdiagnosed as pneumoperitoneum or free air under the diaphragm, which may lead to unnecessary investigations or surgical procedures. Here, we report two incidental chest radiograph findings of air under the diaphragm in patients who were being screen...

Complicated adult right-sided Bochdalek hernia with Chilaiditi’s syndrome: a case report

An extremely rare adult case that underwent surgery for ileus caused by Bochdalek hernia associated with Chilaiditi's syndrome is presented. A 65-year-old woman complaining of upper abdominal pain presented to our hospital. Abdominal plain radiography showed increased intestinal gas, and computed tomography (CT) showed the transverse colon located above the right lobe of the liver, representing...

Chilaiditi's sign possibly associated with malposition of chest tube placement.

Although diaphragmatic paralysis is a rare recognized complication of chest tube malposition, Chilaiditi's sign occurring as a result of this complication has never been reported in literature to the best of our knowledge. We describe one such case, which had an interesting clinical sequence of events and radiographic findings and suggest that the medial end of the chest tube should be position...

The liver and Chilaiditi’s syndrome: Significance of hepatic surface grooves

Chilaiditi's syndrome describes a symptomatic patient with radiographic findings of interposed colon between the diaphragm and right lobe of liver. It may mimic a pneumoperitoneum on plain radiographs. We present a case in which Chilaiditis' syndrome was entertained, delaying a decision for laparotomy. This case reinforces the diagnostic difficulty associated with Chilaiditi's syndrome, and it ...
